Over these past few weeks here on the Young And Fabulous series, we’ve been talking about different challenges that may be stopping you from moving forward with your goals. This week, I am going to introduce you to what’s called as your Limiting Beliefs. Unlike your Gremlin, which is your inner critic, a Limiting Belief is actually something we believed in that has been influenced by an external force – family, friends, event, etc.
Ever heard of the saying “We are a product of our belief system?” Every decision we make stems out from what and who we think we are, and represents the value that we put upon ourselves. I used to have this limiting belief that in order for one to be successful on his career, he needs to work very hard, and put in long hours. My parents are like that. When I got my first job, I had to put in long hours at work, from 6:30AM to 10PM, almost every single day. That was the working norm for most people that time. Finding a job in the Philippines is very hard, and when you have it, you hang on to it for as long as you can. Even if it means sacrificing time for yourself and family.
It wasn’t long before I started struggling about my reality. I wanted a life — outside of work. But that time, the only thing I could do when I’m not at work, is to sleep — because I was dead tired working. I started challenging my own belief. Working long hours just to advance in my career is no longer working for me. I was single at that time, but I started envisioning my future. If I were to have a family, I would like to spend time with them, and not when they’re sleeping already. I wanted time for myself and experience and enjoy life.
I took a step back and weighed my options. I developed my own vision of what I really wanted. I took the time to dig deeper and find out my values and desires. I chose life, which means my career would have to suffer, if I were to stay there. It wasn’t long before I got the opportunity to work here in the States. Now I have a wonderful career, and I get to enjoy life — with my family and love ones.
Many of us grew up believing strongly about something. These beliefs can be so ingrained in us, that we never even questioned why we think and act as we do. This week, let’s do some digging. Let’s try to look into our personal belief system and see how it may be affecting our lives and decide if these beliefs still work for us. See if your present belief system is positively supporting you in every area of your life. Decide if you need to create new, more empowering beliefs that will support you and help you move forward.
Looking forward to reading your posts.

I love the idea of an inner gremlin, that is such a great visualization for what the inner critic is and does to us! So often we get caught up in actually believing the things we hear in our minds from that sneaky little voice and it can be a difficult rut to get out of once we get into it. These inner beliefs can seriously hold us back and limit what we are capable of in the long run.

That was a great post…very insightful…not quite sure how to change my own belief.
Great article about how our Belief System affects our whole Life in many ways. This is something that I needed to be reminded of today and thanks for sharing your own Personal story of the way it was like and how you Changed your old ways of Thinking to the Better.
Even though, changing old thoughts patterns and old way of responding are the main and most important things that I work on with other people, I myself sometimes forget that I have to keep up with this, as well.
This is great advice, to reflect on our inner beliefs and double check that they are supporting our life in a positive manner. We should perform this reflection periodically throughout our life to ensure that our belief system grows as we grow.

Sometimes we have trouble nailing down our limiting beliefs. I find spending a few moments in quiet contemplation, then using my daughter’s crayon and creating a little art piece, really helps me connect to my center.
Then, whatever problem I’m working on becomes clearer. Can’t explain it, it just works.
