As promised, here are 10 simple things you can start incorporating into your lifestyle to reduce your carbon dioxide footprint courtesy of climatecrisis.net
- Change your lights. Replacing one regular lightbulb with a compact flourescent one will save about 150 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
- Drive Less. You’ll save one pound of carbon dioxide for every mile you skip driving, so just walk, bike, carpool or take the mass transit more often.
- Turn off electronic devices. Thousands of pounds of carbon doixide will be saved in a year by simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo and computer when you’re not using them.
- Avoid products with a lot of packaging. You can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide if you cut down your garbage by 10%.
- Recycle more. Recycling just half of your household waste will save about 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year.
- Adjust your thermostat. Moving your thermostat down by 2 degrees in winter and up 2 degrees in summer will save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per year.
- Check your tires. Keeping your tires properly inflated can improve gas mileage by more than 3%. Every gallon of gasoline saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere!
- Use less hot water. Heating water takes a lot of energy. By installing a low flow showerhead, you will save about 350 pounds of CO2 per year. Washing your clothes in cold or warm (instead of hot) water will save about 500 pounds of CO2 per year.
- Plant a tree. A single tree will absorb about one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.
- Spread the word. Share this post with your family and friends. Repost it to your facebook, multiply, linkedin accounts. Submit it to digg, stumbleupon, etc. Forward it through email.
Encourage your friends to rent, borrow or buy “An Inconvenient Truth” dvd. This would also make a great gift for the holidays.

[...] 1.1 My Hot Mom Tip: Reduce Your CO2 Footprint Part 2 [...]
I agree wtih all of the above, but I would like to add another one if I may. I think that we as mothers are responsible for our children’s futures by eliminating chemicals from our home. Do you no that detergents are a huge pollutant in our country? We need to look to more eco safe cleaning products in our home that are made from more natural ingredients. By doing this we are not only helping out our family, but we are doing our part for our world.

Oh, I totally agree, miss_melaney. That’s one of the first things I eliminated from my house. I replaced all toxic cleaners and household stuff with seventh generation ones. Sometimes I just use vinegar and baking soda. One thing I’ve learned from other hot moms is to add drops of essential oils to your vinegar solution to eliminate the sour smell and it works!
Thank you for sharing!
Lots of good ideas.
Good tips. I have already started by slowly replacing my lightbulbs with the compact flourescent ones. I keep my thermostat turned down as low as possible in the winter and as high as possible in the summer. I also make sure to keep everything off and unplugged that I am not using.
It’s time we should stop being indifferent & start caring for our planet. Thank you for inspiring moms.
