Katie is a navy wife and new mom. Her son Donovan was born in October 2009, a week after her husband came home from their first deployment and the day after his birthday. She has been married to her sailor for 3 years as of May and he has been in the service just a smidge longer than that. They are a typical internet couple, as in they met on myspace. They currently live in VA, doing the hurry up and wait game that the military is famous for.
Katie is currently a SAHM, while working on her medical transcription certification. She has a BA degree in Psychology and has worked many different types of jobs, from Mental Health Case Manager, Pharmacy Technician at Wal-Mart, Cashier at Panera Bread and a Temp worker in a Blood Bank. Moving with the military proves to be hard with finding a job, and then on top of that moving to a new place and being pregnant put a damper on finding work. But being a mom is a job in of itself while being a Navy wife. She has her site, My Life as a Navy Wife, to share her life, her passions, her weight loss journey, and the ups and downs of being married to the Military.
Trying to find balance in a military life is a hard thing to do, on top of trying to finish school, and raise a family. Not having the constant support of the spouse, there’s a good part of the time that leaves Katie playing both mom and dad. Going from having a career and working all the time to being a Stay at home Wife then Mom was a big change for her, considering she worked full time and went to Marshall University to pursue her BA degree. She does take time each day to talk with friends and have adult time when Baby D is asleep. She enjoys going for walks at the park with her family and going to the beach or being outdoors. Katie also enjoys getting fitness in, since it gives her energy. She is working hard to lose the weight that she had put on while working and going to school, and thanks to her husband’s undying support, she feels like she can do it finally. Eating better and getting some physical activity helps her stay focused when everything else seems out of control.
One thing that she can recommend to anyone is to make sure that you have good friendships and good support systems since they will come in handy at anytime. There are times when you just need a break from your life and by spending time with those around you, that support you can be a huge lifesaver. Katie finds that her friends become her family while she is living far from her real family and that those support help her get through the stress that being a mom and a navy wife give her.

I think it’s easy to let the friendships slide when you become a mom. Unless you know other moms. And without a good support system, I think moms just flounder.
Good for you, having a blog. I wish they were around when my kids were small. I can see how it would give you a great outlet. I know I didn’t have any hobbies when my kids were born.
I developed a love for gardening and sewing, but if I had those hobbies right away, I think it would have made the transition from working woman to SAHM much easier.

Katie, it must be very tough to juggle school responsibilities with raising a family especially in your case where your spouse is not constantly there with you to support. But you’re able to do it and you’re doing a great job at it! Way to go in being such a good inspiration to our hot mom community. Keep on rockin’, hot momma!

Katie, I commend every bit of what you’re doing. You’re right, a support system can really help in every way; I had 2 kids back to back and I can totally relate with you on everything you must be going through; the emotions, your weight loss journey, etc. You are strong and beautiful because you’re a mom and no one can come even close to that. Keep up your great work and thanks for sharing!
Katie~
My hat is off to you! I can’t image what you go through every day! You’ve done a great job, finding a way to have your needs met through friendships and activity! I remember finding friends that I could ‘trade-babysit’ with that would give the kids safe interaction and me time off! Some of my favorite times when my kids were little was sitting at the park chatting with the other parents and watching my kids play!
Continue to enjoy!
