Ditch the miracle foods that come in vacuum packs stacked up in the supermarkets these days. Though most of them claim they’re the “fountain of youth”, here’s a list of what the longest-lived people from all over the world are eating, according to experts from RealAge.com.
- Japan: Tofu – Okinawa is where residents age gracefully to 100+ more often than anywhere else on earth. Researchers credit this mild-tasting soy curd’s low fat content and high levels of good-for-you saponins and isoflavones.
- Nova Scotia: Wild Blueberry “Grunt” – Canada’s highest percentages of people who’ve lived for at least 100 years is here at Nova Scotia probably due to the polyphenol-packed wild blueberries produced by the millions of tons on this island.
- Greece: Lots of Veggies, Little Meat – Researchers have found that death rates on some Greek Islands were lowest for those who ate the most fruit, vegetables, beans, and olive oil. Occasional glass of wine helped, too.
- Costa Rica: Beans for Breakfast – Residents of Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula are four times more likely than most North Americans to live past age 90. Big breakfasts that begin with beans rule there.
- France: Wine – Moderate drinking (1 glass for women, up to 2 for men) with a meal a day seems to explainwhy the French tie the Italians (another nation with a healthy love of wine) as Western Europe’s longest-living people despite a penchant for artery-clogging goodies like cheese.
So what’s the real deal about munchies that keep you young and fabulous? Don’t fall for antiaging additive pitches. Instead, steer yourself toward these flavorful, health-giving goodies from Mother Earth that have been tried and tested already.

I agree. You know, I think eating locally has a lot more nutrition as well. Gimmicks are just gimmicks. Eating whole, healthy food that you can recognize where it came from, goes a long way!
Guess I should put my Stacy’s pita chips down now.

Didn’t know about the beans and the blueberry! Very cool.. sometimes we leave out the best kinds of foods which are fruits and vegetables but seeing those percentages motivates me to keep up with the fruits and veggies.

Some great choices… Hmmm maybe a little travel to help get closer to the real source of some of these good things! Never thought of beans for breakfast before, I will try it, let’s see if the family notices!! Beans, little meat, tofu and blueberries, I’m in!

This is so very interesting. I have been wondering for the longest what it was with some of the cultures and their longevity. Americans have become so lazy when it comes to eating the proper foods. Everything has to be take out and processed so that it can be ready in 20 minutes or less. Thank you for this article. I’m going to share it with my family as we have been trying to make changes in our food choices for the past two years. So far so good, though we do have some slip ups.
