Day 10 on the EA Sports Active 30 day challenge and still going strong! I love the fact that I get to write about our fitness family progress every week as part of the Mamavation campaign. I love the fact that I get support and motivation from the Mamavation moms every single day. It really keeps me going! Thank you so much!
On to our progress. Hubby and I are still on! Yay! Kids workout when they have no school using either Wii fit or the EA Sports Active. Another thing I love is that the kids are getting into a routine of exercising on the weekends. I figured they already play a lot in school so I just let them either rest or be active at home during the weekdays.
Weight:
Since we didn’t have any specific weight loss goals, we didn’t take our starting weights last week. But it would help to have a baseline to compare it with so we took it this week instead.
My starting weight = 147.5 lbs
Hubby’s starting weight = 224 lbs
Diet:
Five years ago, I made an effort to transform our family’s diet into organic and all-natural. Soda, chocolates, candies, junk foods were totally banned from the house. On the weekends, I allow the whole family to eat ORGANIC chips. They can eat chocs and candies when they’re at parties – they’re kids, they will eat these no matter what. So I let them at parties. But at home, there are NONE of these to tempt us.
We love to eat. But as part of my effort to practice wholesome eating, I try to feed my family with as much whole foods as I can. Foods that are closer to its source like fruits, veggies, grains, etc. Sure we still eat processed foods like cereals, bread, etc. But I’m trying to make it as minimal as possible. And as I said, organic or all-natural. Foods without preservatives, additives, artificial ingredients, or other toxic stuff. Any ingredient too cryptic for me to read (which means it’s not a whole food), and I’m leaving it on the store. The lesser ingredients, the better. That’s how paranoid I’ve become about food.
And why not? Remember the saying “You are what you eat?” I think of my body like a car, only, I don’t get to replace it with a new one. I only get one in my lifetime. Anything I put on it can either nourish it, or slowly kill it. If I put “bad gasoline” into it, it will build up gunk inside that will eventually cause it to malfunction and die. Now imagine your arteries clogging with gunk from what you’ve been eating all these years. Euwwwww! Exactly my point.
I don’t like to measure food. Not only it’s more work for me, but it sends message to my brain to eat more. So I eventually eat more and gain weight. But I’ve learned to listen to my body. I eat when I’m hungry and I stop when I’m full. Hopefully, our conscious efforts of eating more whole foods in moderation will help us loose the excess weight eventually.
Goals:
I’m 27 pounds overweight. But I’m not in hurry to loose all the excess weight. As I’ve said in my first fitness family post, our main goal is to incorporate a workout routine into our lifestyle. Our long-term goal is to live a healthy lifestyle where our kids would grow accustomed with. I will welcome whatever weight will come off with this effort. Besides, it might be replaced with muscle weight so I’m not really focusing on weight itself.
I wear a size 8 because my muffin top awfully shows on my size 6 clothes. This is definitely what I would like to see gone this year — my muffin top! And be able to fit back on my size 6 clothes comfortably — without my muffin top!
I’d like to be able to wear sleeveless shirts in the summer with great confidence — which means I want to have toned arms. It doesn’t have to look like Michelle Obama’s arms, just not flabby ones would be great.
So there goes my weekly fitness family progress report. Appreciate all your feedback, support and motivation!

Good for you!! I think it is fantastic that you’ve banned all junk from your house and you got the family to go along with it. Just now I suggested that to my family. Hubs said, “Well, everything in moderation”, and DD said, “That is the worst idea I have ever heard!”. Oh dear. We don’t eat too much junk to begin with, but I wouldn’t mind seeing it all band! I’ll have to work on that one…
My kids were very, very young when I started doing it so it was just my husband totally opposing it, but not even him could stop me. It will be harder for you if you have older kids, but stick to it, and I guarantee you that it’s all worth it.

That’s awesome that you have the whole family working with you on this. My biggest downfall is that I can’t BAN food from the house…husband will buy it anyway, and if I see it, I eat it. He’s been starting to get better about this…it’s been a slow process.
How did you get you husband on the bandwagon? Was it just as challenging?
He wasn’t at first and it was very challenging. But then he realized that I wasn’t gonna give up so he eventually went on board.

I am trying some of the same changes you have made, but I am not nearly as strict as you are. I have so much to learn!! Thank you for supporting me on my journey!
I totally get you with the food stuff. I started getting really paranoid about the food I was giving my kids as I started studying ingredients.
I’m so happy you are joining with us! XXOO

Good luck on your goals. I love having an active family in the White House to serve as inspiration for us all, I think 2010 will be the year of the sexy shoulders and arms thanks to Michelle. My husband and I are whole wholesome food people too, and it will be interesting to see how he raise our first child in a world of processed foods. Thanks for mentioning your approach.
Cherrie!!
What WONDERFUL goals you have! I admire your healthy eating habits and am slowly but surely incorporating some of the same things into our diets around here! Your dedication is inspiring and you are a wonderful role model!! I love the Wii and EAactive too! So glad to *meet you on this journey!!
I’m impressed with your food at home! We eat like you the majority of the time, but I’ve never been so bold as to BAN anything. I will have to ponder that!
Great Job! I love that you transformed your family’s eating habits. We are starting to do that in our house, but I know it won’t happen overnight. I love my EA Sports Active, too. It kicked my butt this morning!

Great job keeping active and involving the family too!
I have slowly been making changes in our family’s diet as well. I cook with whole foods, no processed stuff. We haven’t made the switch to organic in everything yet – it’s a process. Plus I want to make sure my Hubby doesn’t rebel at all the changes all at once.
You’re doing a great job – keep up the good work!!

wow I wish I would have gotten rid of all the junk…my son is so picky and loves all the junk! You are such a good mom!
Muffin top, #1 enemy for me too. I think that is awesome that you’re doing less processed and junk food. Love the “wholefood” thing.

I love that you’ve incorporated the whole family into a healthy and active lifestyle rather than into a weight loss boot camp. That makes it easier on the kids and teaches them how to make healthy choices.

GREAT job! I love that you have the whole family involved, that is so huge! We’ve tried to do the organic thing, and just fell off the wagon with rising prices and a tighter budget. I do make sure we have more produce, whole grains, and lean meats then we do junk and sweets.

I try to do the same thing with Bradley. I don’t ever give him candy because I know he’s going to get it somewhere else (like from Papaw!). I like your healthy attitude.

I, too, would love to have nice toned arms. In HS I had fantastic arms – almost Mrs. Obama quality arms – but no longer. So I like your goal, and I’m working on it too!
