In January of this year, I started a fitness journey for my family by becoming more active. We’ve been eating pretty well these past few years. Focusing more on whole, natural foods, less processed ones and preferrably organic and all-natural. Clean eating has given us more energy as a result, so I’ve decided to take on the journey to be more active this year, hoping to influence the whole family, just as I transitioned our diet the past few years.
It’s also my hope that by providing updates on what and how we’re doing, I can inspire more moms to take care of themselves, and move forward in their quest to a healthier lifestyle.
I’ve been giving regular updates to our fitness family journey until May when things became hectic. Though we continue trying to be active — I finished the 30-day EA Sports Challenge, the 30-day Shred, the Wii More Active, and have been doing Zumba using online videos, as well as running outside, the kids are into Figure Skating, roller blading, biking, and active playing, I haven’t given an update in the past month.
But before I fill you in on how we’re doing, I want to hear from you on how you and your family’s doing in terms of health and wellness.
We could all learn from each other so sharing your fitness family routine and activities by commenting below would help all of us learn from each other.
Anyway, here’s what’s been happening to us:
- We went to the Philippines in June for 3 weeks. It was so much fun seeing families. The weather was humid all the time, not the typical humid you experience here in the States. We were sweating all the time! Even in the shower! People there shower several times a day! That’s why I laugh when I hear people complain how humid it gets here sometimes. You have no idea what humid is until you get to the Philippines!
- But I’m so glad we got to sweat a lot there. I’ve been eating a lot – all the foods I’ve missed all these years! Skipped working out coz I was trying to save my energy and avoid heat exhaustion. What a good excuse! Lol!

- When we got back, we were missing the vacation mode so much that we’ve decided to sign up for Lifetime Fitness family membership. The kids just want to swim all the time and I figured the monthly membership is worth it coz hubby and me gets to work out, the kids gets to do rock wall climbing, swimming and kids play/gym while we’re there. And of course, I love the steam, sauna and hot tub!
- So far, we’ve been going there almost everyday. I love the variety of group exercises I’m able to go to — Zumba, Latin Fusion, Strictly Strength, and Yoga! I gotta try the other classes as well.
- Hubby has signed up for personal training! Anyone who knows my husband would be surprised coz he’ll play basketball and that’s it! Won’t do any other type of exercise at all. We had 3 free personal training which he got all for himself. He loved the way he felt after working out that he signed up for more until he can do it by himself. I’m soooo happy for him!

- As if that’s not enough, we adopted a great dane this weekend! Jozzi is so adorable. Our pug Zoe is still getting used to her but she loves the fact that she’s got company now. My husband always wanted a great dane so when he saw her, he just fell in love. In fact, we all did. She’s very, very sweet and well-behaved. Our pug looked like a spoiled brat with her around, hopefully she’ll learn from her “big sister” eventually. My husband is now more motivated to do long walks!
Weight-wise, it’s been the same with my last update. Still around 141-143 pounds (for some reason, been bouncing in this range every day). When I started in January of this year, I was 147.5. Not bad considering all the “pigging out” I did in the Philippines, lol! Husband so far has lost about 15 pounds since January.
Food-wise, it’s been the same. Organic, and all-natural foods, especially fruits and veggies. I only buy meat that has no preservatives, antibiotics or growth hormones.
So that’s our fitness family half year update for 2010. We’ve been having a lot of fun on this journey. Looking forward to as much fun for the rest of the year!
What’s your family’s fitness routine? How have you been taking care of yourself lately?

Let’s see, I just finished a 14 day Master Cleanse and I’m eating gluten, dairy and sugar free. I lost 13 pounds during the cleanse, but that isn’t why I did it. I started a love story with myself and this is the first step.
My youngest daughter (15 yo) has been eating nutritious foods this summer (no junk food and lots of fruits and veggies). And she has been exercising with the Zumba dvd. Our healthy eating and exercising has inspired my older daughter (17 yo) to exercise with her sister and cut out junk food.
My husband has committed to eating whatever I’m eating and last night we had rice pasta with gluten, sugar free pasta sauce and sauteed organic portobella mushrooms. Yum!

That’s awesome, Debbie! We started eating healthy too then gradually got into being more active. Clean eating just gives you more energy that you could use to be more active. I’m glad you and your family are into it as well! I used to detox every year but the program I had was a month long. I need to look into a shorter one. What’s your detox program like?

Hi Melissa! After being successful in the past years in transitioning our diet and lifestyle to organic and all-natural, I made a goal this year to get myself and my family more active. I wasn’t focusing on the weight loss aspect as I just want to have fun in exploring ways we could be physically active. All I am looking for is some sort of a routine that we could do and enjoy and incorporate into our lifestyle. The weight loss would come as an added bonus. That way, we won’t be all stressed out on whether or not we were able to lose weight or not. I figured that would be an end result. What’s important for me right now is to establish a healthy and active lifestyle first for me and my family.

beautiful! cherrie, sounds like you’ve already accomplished this =) YOU ROCK!!!!
Wow! Congratulations Cherrie! You have such ambitious fitness goals and you have your family engaged too! Incredible!
It’s so wonderful your whole family got to travel and have a beautiful vacation in the Philippines. That’s one thing that children remember is all of their travels to many different countries and different cultures. Your children are very fortunate!
Oh and I just love your new dog! Zoe looks so cute looking way up at Jazzi. Thank you for sharing your very happy and balanced life with all of us!
Much aloha,

Even though my kids are grown, they still live with us (temporarily, I’m hoping!!) and so I get to influence their eating habits if not their activities.
Organic, natural foods have been the mainstay of our menues for the past year, but thanks to my daughter, we’ve recently become mostly vegetarian, with just fish, eggs and only-really-good cheese as additional protein.
As I’m gluten intolerant, I’ve had fun experimenting with rice pastas and other gluten-free products. So far, I don’t feel deprived at all and even my usually carnivorous son has enjoyed the lighter feeling that a veggie meal leaves you with.
Your journey is hugely inspiring, Cherrie dear. Thanks for bringing us along.

Hi Cherrie,
I always talk to my boys about what they’re eating. I’ve seen that by doing this, they have become conscious of how important it is to eat healthy foods. When we go out, they actually ask to eat at Subway many times. I’m glad they see the importance of these things right now… I’m sure it will make a big difference in their long term health. Your passion for a healthy family can be felt in your writing.
Blessings♥,
Eren

Hi Eren!
It’s so nice that you’re so excited to change your lifestyle and that you really have! It seems like you haven’t done anything extreme too, just changing the amount of activity you get and eating better food, which is all something that’s doable for the long run. Very inspiring. Thank you!!

Wow! Look at all these accomplishments. Good for you guys! My family and I are going to the gym 5-7 days a week. My DD loves it there. She’s learning to cartwheel and socialize with other kids (it’s working out much better than her brief stint in preschool). She knows the routine is we drop her off with the other kids, we go work out, come back and get her and go swimming.
I’m so jealous that you got to go to the Philippines! My best friend is Filipina/Spanish and her mom makes amazing food. Pancit, adobo, halo halo, empanadas, filpino style sticky rice tamales, etc!
The great dane is BEAUTIFUL. I am such a dog lover, but my fiance is a cat person (why we have 4 cats). He’s been saying that we’ll get a dog when we have an enclosed space for one and I’m hoping that’s soon!
Way to go getting your family involved at the gym and making it fun for them!
That is awesome that your whole family is so involved. I have not been able to get my family all that involved, which is probably why now that Im pregnant I have been slacking so much.

I’m running a half marathon in December. It’s called #mizboorun and I’m running with Mizfitonline, Carla Binberg. She is fab! Neither one of us are runners, so it’s a bit of a stretch for both of us. Glad to see you back!!

I’ve started getting off my butt and working out more (major quit smoking distraction for me!) Even my 4 year old has started to workout with me and loves it!
Have a great week

Wow you are doing some great things for you and your family! The fitness club sounds like so much fun! Wish we had something like that here.
I just started couch 2 5k training. My husband is walking occasionally – when I can drag them out. And the kids are always running around, biking, playing soccer, swimming. Overall we’re getting more active too.

Thanks for the update Cherrie. The tropics are no joke. I did a lot of work in Central and South America and the only way you can workout in the lowlands is if you are constantly dirnking H2O and are used to it. Your dogs are super adorable together! Good for your hubby for moving beyond basketball, it is a testament to the healthy example you set.
In our home we are doing great. We are adjusting to life with a child. I am running again, teaching yoga again, and enjoying where we are. My husband and I are running against each other later this month then it will just be me focusing on a couple of longer races with some friends. Per usual, local, organic food… making our calories count.

Well, I’ve been out of the loop for about two months. Decided its time for me to get active and eat right again. I really need too! Hoping it will take care of some of my health problems. I created a Biggest Loser Challenge at work. Work seems to be my biggest downfall, because everyone orders out for breakfast and lunch and we are sometimes so busy we don’t get a break. Having this challenge and getting my co-workers involved should help keep us accountable and make my work life a little healthier. I have also been soda free for 8 weeks now!!
Great idea on the family membership to Lifetime Fitness. I wish I had one near me! I am really interested in Zumba, could you tell me where to find the Zumba video’s online? Looking forward to reading your progress next week
