About three weeks ago, I was at the top of my workout routine, doing the Shred, Zumba, EA Sports Active, and I even started running outside according to my last Fitness Family post. Then I got really, really sick with cough and colds. I normally don’t get sick, and even if I do, it just takes me a day or two to recover and I’m back on my feet again.
I took two days off from work on the first week supposedly to rest. I couldn’t workout since I would die coughing at the slightest hint of doing some cardio. Instead, I contented myself with walking outside with my family. I still tried to be active even without a formal workout. Heck we even went fishing. Being stubborn that I am, I tried to take advantage of my day offs and “extra” time by doing a lot of back end work on my blog -automating stuff.
Instead of resting and giving my body the time to heal itself, I was even staying up late nights coding and doing other geeky stuff. Two weeks later, I was still sick as hell!
Of course that’s when I realized what I was doing. Though I wasn’t literally tiring myself with workouts, I wasn’t giving myself the proper care and rest it needs to heal! Sick + lack of rest + lack of sleep = longer sickness! Duh!
Too bad I had to suffer for two weeks before I could even realize what I was doing. But the moment I started paying attention to what my body needs and giving it proper rest, the sooner I started feeling better.
I was able to do some yoga now. My plan is to slowly get back on my workout routine, maybe start with level 1 of the Shred again (ugh I was on level 2 already), then slowly add more once I get my momentum back.
Lesson learned: It’s not all about multi-tasking and how much stuff you can get done. Sometimes the best way is to just let go of things for a while and let your body heal itself so you can go back on your feet sooner.

I have to totally shut down when I get sick. Even slightest cold. But of course, I had to learn that the hard way. Good think you’re listening to your body now!

Glad you are taking care of yourself now and letting your body rest when it needs it.
Girly, you’ve got to learn about tomato tea….I’ll send you to a website instead of relaying it myself so you can see just how great it works! Believe me I’ve been there and you don’t have to be stuck where you are. You’ll pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start anew (my famous last words huh?)….check out this website woman that’s an order! lolol http://www.earthclinic.com. look up tomato tea……
Rest is SO important – great post! I have been making a conscious effort recently to sleep a minimum of 6 hours per night to allow my body to rest (and that is when I am well!).
In addition, I just had surgery 1 month ago and I totally agree with your assesment above. I absolutely hated being “bed bound” and doing or accomplishing very little every day. But I had to get over those thoughts and realize that my body needed the rest and break from the every day craziness that makes up my life
So here I am 1 month later much stronger and (almost) back to myself again – although not running yet. Doc says I need to wait another month for that…
I have a cold right now that is kicking my butt I am trying not to do a whole lot but things need done at the house. But I hear yeah we need to listen to our bodies. Have a good week hot mom!

Yes, I agree. When I used to get sick while I was losing weight, I’d just concentrate on my nutrition. Cause that was all I had control over.

It’s so hard to lose weight and be motivated to exercise when you are sick. You will get there again!

I hate being sick! Especially when I am mentally motivated to workout. Good for you that you realized what your body needs. You learned the lesson so you can apply it sooner next time! Get some rest and eat well!

I’m glad to hear you’re on the mend! You’re so right about needing to take time off completely to heal. It’s so important!

Yes, must always get some rest when being sick. Whenever I get sick, I usually try to walk for 15 to 30 mins instead of doing the videos or the wii. At least this way, I know I’m moving a little bit but main thing is watching what you eat. Glad to hear you are on the mend. Take care of yourself!

It stinks getting sick because you want to workout and keep going, but you know that if you do, you will never get better!
Glad you came to your senses and stayed focus on what was important: your health! Sadly, it took you a few weeks, but we are all guilty of that at one time or another
